How to Quit Your Job Over Text

Leaving a job is always a delicate matter, especially if you have worked there for many years. Life circumstances change, and you may have realized that you don’t want to do this type of work anymore, or you may have found a better offer that pays you more. It’s not possible to leave “without saying goodbye” now, especially if you have an employment agreement or contract.

It may seem strange, but many problems and issues can now be solved remotely. Google it or ask your friends – there are definitely those who have been fired in a text message, simply by writing something like “you are not suitable for us, sorry, yada yada yada”. If an employer can “get rid of” an employee in this way, it means that it’s possible to do the opposite.

Text as the First Step to Freedom

During the coronavirus pandemic, many companies around the world were forced to switch to remote work, with most employees staying at home. The disease has already receded, but many processes have been adapted to this format. Including the dismissal procedure.

Even if everything is fine for now, and you’re happy with your schedule, boss, and salary, it doesn’t hurt to know how to quit your job over text. Life is unpredictable, so there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to do it in person whenever you want.

The first thing you need to do is, of course, send the text itself. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • the employer may not read it – for example, they may simply miss it among a pile of others;
  • use your own number, which is in your work file – they will not be able to identify you from another number;
  • your employer has the right to disagree with you, so just sending a text message is not a reason not to go to work if the dismissal process has not been initiated;
  • the message may not be received, for example, due to a malfunction of the mobile operator.

To ensure that your boss reads your message accurately, duplicate it or send it via messengers, such as WhatsApp, or Telegram. There you can clearly see whether the person has read your message or not. Besides, it’s easier to figure out who wrote the message in case, for example, your boss doesn’t have your name in their contact book. This is also possible, especially if your company has many employees.

You don’t have to get a response right away, and it’s not a given that you will get one at all. Some employers are too busy, while others are simply used to dealing with important issues – including these – in person. So be prepared for a conversation on the phone, or, again, via messengers, or maybe even a video call.

It can also happen otherwise – the boss will fully understand, support, and start the dismissal process.

Are you thinking about how to quit a part time job? The mechanism is the same but always read the employment contract carefully. There may be clauses and sub-clauses that are often overlooked, such as good reasons for dismissal at the employee’s initiative, a requirement to work for a certain period of time, to transfer your business to someone else, and so on.

How to Conveniently Quit Your Job via Text?

Let’s imagine a few possible scenarios when you sent your employer a text about your desire to quit. Let’s say you duplicated it several times, sent it to messengers, and then suddenly your boss calls you with the same, longed-for (or not) request to stay. Or just to ask why you made this decision.

Think carefully about how to quit your job over text and why. If it’s an impulsive decision because you:

  • had a fight with a colleague,
  • you are tired,
  • you didn’t get enough sleep,

so, maybe you shouldn’t make a decision right away. Sometimes we make decisions in the heat of the moment and regret them later. By the way, you should think about this before you send a text because you can’t take it back.

If you have the best excuse to quit a job – for example, you are not satisfied with your salary, you have found another job, or you want to change your occupation – just let them know. You have the right to terminate your employment contract on your own initiative, especially since many companies have started using electronic documents and digital signatures during the pandemic.

Another scenario is that the manager doesn’t respond and doesn’t react in any way, even though it’s clear that they have read your messages in messengers. In this case, there are two options: call and talk, or come to work tomorrow and put a pre-drafted and signed resignation letter on his desk.

When you wonder how to quit a part time job, for example, in which you have a signed contract or a fixed-term contract, be sure to pay attention to the terms of early termination. In some cases, you may not receive money for the work you have already done, or even receive a fine from your employer. It’s better to discuss such issues in advance, before signing the document.

Good Reasons for Dismissal

In some cases, you have the right to resign on your own initiative without your employer objecting. This is possible if you have the best excuse to quit a job, such as:

  • your employer is blatantly violating labor laws – for example, you have faced bullying or harassment, which, unfortunately, is quite possible;
  • you are going to move to another city/country, or your spouse is planning to do so;
  • you are pregnant;
  • you are unable to work due to medical reasons, e.g., the climate of the region where you work is harmful to you, the working hours, conditions, etc.

Here are text examples to quit a job to make it easier for you:

“Please dismiss me voluntarily because…”

“I can no longer fulfill my job duties because…”

“I want to resign from my job because…, I am sending an application signed with an electronic signature.”

Use these examples or come up with your own. The main thing is not to hesitate if you want to quit and don’t be afraid to discuss this issue with your management.
